What Are Your Items Worth?

The resale value of your jewelry is not related to what you originally paid.

Although it can come as a big surprise, the fact is that the resale value of your jewelry is not related to what you originally paid.  Even an item’s appraised value for insurance purposes has very little influence on its resale value. Appraised values are for the costs associated with replacing an item – not its resale value.

Intrinsic value, also known as cash value or scrap value, is the recycle value of the materials (metal and gemstones) that make up a piece of jewelry.

In most cases, unwanted jewelry is neither current nor vintage, and is usually sold for the intrinsic value of its silver, gold, platinum. Some precious gemstones may have additional value.

The reality is that most jewelry is only worth the scrap value of its pure precious metal content and a percentage of the current wholesale market price of gemstones. The actual amount of pure gold in an item varies depending on its gold karat value – most often 10K, 14K or 18K. A karat is 1/24 part of pure gold by weight, so 24-karat gold is pure gold. Keep in mind that the amount you will be paid will be a percentage of current value of the pure metal.

Gold coins and bars usually are worth 90% to 95% of the current market value or pure gold.

As for gemstones, usually only precious gemstones (diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires) have any meaningful resale value, unless a non-precious gem is very large or rare.

There are exceptions when jewelry is worth more than its just its scrap metal value. The resale value of a piece of jewelry will depend on its condition, the current market demand for its style, the quality of workmanship, the cache of the brand, and the value of the materials it is made with. Classic designs and certain unique pieces that currently appeal to the public will have the best resale value.

Estate jewelry that is out of style is usually purchased for scrap. Antique jewelry, as opposed to just old items, can be highly collectible and valuable. For items you believe are truly antiques, you may want an appraisal.

Although these exceptions do happen, it is wise to be prepared for the resale value of your jewelry being limited to its intrinsic value.
